The centre has been established to support digital industrial transformation through experiential learning, applied research, faculty development, and industry collaboration. Bengaluru was selected due to its strong ecosystem across aerospace, defense, electronics, automotive, and advanced manufacturing sectors.

SMCC focuses on key Industry 4.0 technologies including mechatronics, industrial automation, industrial IoT, AI and machine learning for manufacturing, digital twins, virtual commissioning, machine vision, and advanced robotics. The centre also aims to help MSMEs evaluate, prototype, and adopt advanced manufacturing technologies while reducing implementation risks and costs.
