The SAM (Safety and Acceptability of Driving and Self-Driving Mobility) research project: results and perspectives

SAM (Safety and Acceptability of self-driving Mobility) research project, led by PFA (French Automotive Platform) began in 2019. Partners come from the whole Mobility eco-system, transport operators like RATP, SNCF or TRANSDEV, System designers like Alstom or Valeo, Academics like SystemX and Vedecom, OEMs like Renault or Stellantis, Automated vehicle manufacturers like Easymile or Twinswheel, and technical services like UTAC. At that time no regulation or standard was existing about the safety and safety demonstration of SAE level 3 and more automated driving systems. The safety & validation work-package of SAM delivered “Safety referentials” to set safety targets and Safety demonstration methodologies (and sometimes tools : virtual testing, scenarios catalogue, scenario library like ADScene), and participate to Working groups led by French Ministry of Transport in order to set the legal frameworks and reference guides to authorize Automated Road Transport Systems.
