Advanced connected and automated vehicle (CAV) AI research platform – deployment and results

23 Jun 2026
The presentation provides an overview of the research pertaining to an advanced connected and automated vehicle (CAV) platform deployed for travel corridor coverage spanning two municipalities in Orange County, California. The platform features 25 intersections equipped with AI systems, lidar sensors and edge boxes with various levels of connectivity, including fiber and cellular networks. Advanced sensing technologies are investigated, to enhance the safety of cyclists and other vulnerable road users (VRUs), and to quantify the impact of vehicle speeds and non-university traffic on campus roads.
  • A comprehensive analysis framework has been developed, including microsimulation and controlled modular, model-based engineering experiments XIL (X-in-the-loop, model, SW, HW)
  • The microsimulation shows significant energy efficiency and travel time improvements of up to 38% and 60%, respectively
  • The experimental results align well with the microsimulation for both categories of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) investigated, subcompact and crossover, highlighting energy-efficiency improvements in the 36% range
