In April 2024, NHTSA finalized FMVSS No. 127, mandating day- and night-time lead vehicle AEB and PAEB for all vehicles under 10,000 lb by September 2029. Recognizing the need for thermal night-time testing protocols, in September 2024 Teledyne FLIR sponsored VSI Labs to test several vehicles using FMVSS No. 127 scenarios. The tests, involving a VSI research vehicle with thermal fused PAEB, three commercial vehicles and a thermally heated soft pedestrian target, aimed to support the development of automotive thermal camera test protocols and demonstrate fused thermal PAEB performance. Results will be presented, highlighting advances in pedestrian safety.
