Physics-based sensor models: why do we need them?

20 May 2025
Live Zone 1
Tuesday, May 20, Live Zone 1 – morning session
Automated vehicles need sensors and perception systems to understand the environment. However, testing of automated functions that rely on these sensors is not feasible in the real world. We need accurate sensor models to enable testing in a simulated environment. Claytex has developed physics-based lidar and radar models that use ray tracing and are fully integrated within rFPro AV Elevate. This presentation will walk through the importance of physics-based sensor models. The benefit of replicating physics and the opportunities afforded by ray tracing will be explored, giving insight into how these can be used to create more accurate sensor models.
  • Why we need accurate sensor models for safety assurance
  • The benefit of replicating physics in sensor modeling
  • The opportunities afforded by ray tracing
  • Sensor interaction with materials and the importance for modeling
  • Impact of weather on sensors and integrating degradation in models
